FAQ

  • Does the ADU need to be detached? Or can it be attached to the primary structure? The ADU should be a detached design. The reason is so that the plans are applicable to the most residential lots in North Adams.

  • Are submissions allowed from outside of North Adams? Absolutely! We are looking for the most creative thinking possible and welcome submissions from far and wide.

However, in the event that multiple submissions receive identical scores and are among the top scoring entries, priority will be given to the North Adams entry if applicable.

  • Are any specific building materials required? To promote creative designs, there are no required materials.

  • Is there a limit to the number of submissions a designer can enter? Up to three (3) submissions may be submitted by a person or company.

  • Are there any specific regulations and/or building codes for North Adams that need to be addressed? The emphasis of this competition is to promote creative concepts. As a result, outside of the requirements described, no other regulations and/or building codes need to be addressed. When the selected concepts move towards construction drawings, all local codes and ordinances will need to be followed.

  • Does the structure shown in the site plan need to adhere to the dimensions shown in the example? A larger structure can be used than what is shown in the sample site plan. Please make sure to label the dimensions of the structure.

  • What do winning designers receive? The top three highest scoring entries will each receive a $2500 honorarium. Contact information will be provided of the person or company that submitted the design in the event that they may be contacted to help move concepts toward construction drawings or for additional design work.

  • Once the competition is over, who owns the winning entries? Designers will retain copyright of their entries and are free to use them however they wish. The North Adams Partnership is essentially purchasing a license to use and publish the winning entries for public use on its website.
